Bangkok, Thailand – 3 May 2016: BHIRAJ BURI GROUP, one of Thailand’s leading property developer, have tapped into global expertise to overcome unique engineering challenges as part of the expansion of Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC), one of Asia leading trade and consumer exhibition venues.

During this project, BHIRAJ BURI is working with Aurecon, an engineering consultancy responsible for overcoming design challenges in special structures around the world, including the iconic Wembley Stadium in London. The key challenge of the BITEC building expansion was support of the steel roof structure of the main event hall. With a long span of 108 metres, and height 25 metres, the exhibition hall had to be kept column-free to accommodate world tour concerts, lifestyle events, and large scale international exhibitions.

“Creating such a vast column-free space – almost 9,000 square metres in total – is very challenging. We also had to ensure that the roof had durable strength for heavy loading to be able to support BITEC operations. To do this, we had to create the longest cable-stayed Super Truss framework in Thailand. This was a tremendous effort using the global experience of Aurecon but with designs from Thai engineers and implementation from Thai contractors. We are very proud of this solution,” Mr Thiti Ariyakul, Project Director, Aurecon Consulting (Thailand) Co., Ltd. said.

This innovation will make BITEC’s total exhibition space increase to 70,000 square metres, placing the centre among the leaders of Asia’s exhibition and convention industry. A total of 8,748 square metres will be covered with Super Truss framework roof.

With unequalled event space indoors and out, BITEC offers cutting-edges facilities complemented by reliable connectivity and accessibility. Operations are supported by professional teams of experts servicing first-class event spaces for events of all size, including METALEX and ProPak Asia. BITEC’s convenient link to BTS Bang Na station offers easy access to the city’s main business district and major hotels for visiting exhibitors and the local population, while excellent on-site food and beverage options make BITEC an attractive one-stop destination for event managers.

“The expanded facility will support ASEAN’s growing MICE industry and improve our ability to help our customers in order to build important corporate connections through hosting meetings and extensive multi-day exhibitions as well as accommodating one-off music concerts by international superstars. With the additional facilities, BITEC will be in a better position to meet the demand of MICE organizers and key players in the industry. Our modern facilities together with BITEC’s existing high quality services are just the first step in BITEC’s bid to become one of the leading venues in the region,” Dr. Prasarn Bhiraj Buri, President & CEO, BHIRAJ BURI GROUP said.

For BITEC phase II, there are 32,000 square metres of usable space for exhibitions and 5,800 square metres of usable space for conference and meeting facilities. The project will deliver three new exhibition halls, three new convention halls and 12 new meeting rooms as well as a host of additional business facilities, retail spaces and dining outlets, as well as over 2,600 indoor parking spaces and a commercially licensed rooftop helipad. BITEC phase II will add Thailand’s largest three floor underground parking spaces, equivalent to 94 Olympic standard swimming pools.

On completion, expected by the end of 2016, BITEC phase II is expected to support the growth of Thailand’s MICE industry and place BITEC as one of the most competitive MICE venues in Asia.
